The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program aims to support the best postdoctoral researchers both nationally and internationally, fostering their leadership potential and positioning them for future success as research leaders. This program seeks to:

Program Scope
- 70 fellowships are awarded annually
- 140 active awards at any given time
- Fellowships are distributed among:
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

Fellowship Details
- Value: $70,000 per year (taxable)
- Duration: 2 years (non-renewable)
- Total Funding: $140,000 per recipient
Application Timeline
- April – September 2025: Applicants seek endorsement from host institutions and submit applications.
- September 17, 2025 (20:00 EDT): Application submission deadline.
- October – December 2025: Applications are evaluated.
- Mid-February 2026: Applicants are notified of results via ResearchNet.
- April – October 2026: Fellowship payments begin.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicant Eligibility
- Citizenship: Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreign applicants.
- Degree Completion:
- PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree completed between September 15, 2022, and September 30, 2026.
- Proof of degree completion is required by October 15, 2026.
- Institutional Requirements:
- Non-Canadian applicants must hold the fellowship at a Canadian institution.
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents with foreign PhDs must hold the fellowship at a Canadian institution.
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents with Canadian PhDs may hold the fellowship in Canada or abroad.

Host Institution Eligibility
- Eligible institutions include Canadian and foreign universities, research hospitals, colleges, and non-profits with strong research mandates.
- Ineligible hosts: Canadian government entities and for-profit organizations.
Additional Restrictions
- Applicants cannot hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position.
- Those who previously held CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC postdoctoral fellowships may apply if their previous award ends by September 30, 2026
- Concurrent holding of another tri-agency postdoctoral training award is not permitted.
Special Circumstances
Applicants may extend their eligibility window by up to 3 years for reasons such as:
- Parental leave, illness, health-related family responsibilities
- Mandatory military service, war/conflict, natural disasters
- Pandemic-related disruptions, socio-economic challenges
- Non-research-related clinical training (for health professionals)
